Born out of the typically hard times of the 30's, Ted Lees returned from World War II inspired by the machinery innovations he witnessed being created during the war. He was young and fully embraced the Kiwi 'can do' attitude and along with his brothers Rowley and Hugh, Lees Industries invented and refined many products in the heavy machinery sector.
By the early 1970’s Lees Industries was the largest manufacturer of heavy machinery in Australasia employing over 700 people. The company’s product line had expanded to offer a full range of forklifts, straddle carriers, airport handling equipment and the famous Lees Marine engine. Today, operating as AB Equipment Marine & Industrial Power, this recent branding evolution brings together the history of Lees Group and directly draws on the extensive resources and capabilities of AB Equipment.
During the 1980’s the machinery sector was no longer protected by import tariffs and the potential to competitively manufacture in New Zealand diminished. Lees became recognised a leading supplier of international heavy machinery and equipment. This saw the beginning of what has been a 25 year partnership with FPT (formerly Fiat Iveco), and more recently expanding the portfolio with the inclusion of Hyundai Infracore (formerly DOOSAN), Inmesol, Sincro, ZF, Borg Warner, Volpi Techno (Paguro) and Zenith Engineering.
